Joanne Benton Memorial Walk
In honor of the late Joanne Benton, former Superintendent of the Wilmington Schools, the Wilmington Educational Foundation has renamed the WEF Walk after Mrs. Benton. Initially known as the WEF Halloween Walk, was the brainchild of Superintendent Benton has become a tradition in Wilmington’s schools. The walk reinforces the Wilmington Public School’s belief in physical activity, healthy eating, nutrition and physical education for all students’ academic success.
Since the first Walk in 2009, this K-5 fitness walk has become the Wilmington Education Foundation’s largest fundraisers. One half of the funds raised at each school will be given back to that school in order to fulfill the needs and wishes of the school during this current school year.. The other half of the funds raised support WEF’s Technology, Curriculum & Educator Exploration Grants.
Students, kindergarten through Grade 5, are encouraged to ask family and friends to sponsor them in this walk. They are invited to wear Halloween costumes, favorite sports team shirts, or orange and black colors for the walk. Each school will conduct the walk on Tuesday, October 31 during the school day. (Rain date is Friday, November 3.)
Sponsor sheets can be found HERE. Sponsor sheets are also distributed to students in the beginning of October.
